Serial killer in Seminole Heights, Florida.

Serial killer in Seminole Heights, Florida.

The peace and quiet of the Seminole Heights neighborhood in Tampa, Florida were abruptly interrupted by the terrifying sound of a series of shootings, which later revealed four people dead. Neighbors were terrified for two months as the police still had not been able to make an arrest.

Finally Tampa police arrested Howell Donaldson III, a 24-year old man. Police took him into custody this Tuesday in the afternoon at a McDonald's restaurant nearby.  He is being charged with four counts of murder.

The arrest happened thanks to the recovery of a gun that police said had been used in the four killings.

Donaldson did admit the gun to be his but he did not admit to the killings. Tampa Police, however, are convinced that they have caught the person responsible.

"We've had other guns, but we knew this was the one," Tampa Police Chief Brian Dugan said. "Now the work begins to shore up the case and get a full prosecution."

The investigation took place during approximately 51 days that terrorized the neighborhood. City officials say that he had "no apparent motive" for the killings.

"He was cooperative, but did not tell us why he was doing this," Dugan said.

Donaldson brought the gun to his job at a restaurant.  There he asked a co-worker to hold it for him.  The employee then told the manager who alerted a police officer at one of the tables in the restaurant.  When Donaldson returned to the restaurant, police were waiting for him and took him into custody.

The Florida Department of Law Enforcement and ATF made an analysis of the cartridge casings fired in the killings and determined that these had been fired from the same gun.  This was the .40-caliber handgun that was the property of the suspect.
